Message from the President
Dear Sister Dames,
I so enjoyed our Dames Who Drink Beer and Play Ping Pong evening on December 1 at Comet Ping Pong. (All ping pong players, winners and losers, shall remain anonymous!) Once again, this member-to-member gathering was a great opportunity to network and just plain ol' gab with sister Dames. Evenings like that make me so grateful for my membership in Dames.
Our next member-to-member networking opportunity is our Holiday Potluck next Monday night at Karen Vartan's. We have two wonderful fundraising events in the works as well: Culinary Women in Words, December 14th and the Women in the Arts of Escoffier Gala next March. Information on all three events is below.
Just in, Carol Brock, our 90 year-young LDEI founder, will attend our Culinary Women in Words. It is a great honor for our chapter to host Carol. If you haven't met her you are in for a treat. This event will be a wonderful chance to chat with our DC Dame book authors and make holiday gift purchases. A portion of the proceeds go to support our scholarship program! Please sign up today.
This is such a busy time of year for everyone, but particularly for all of us in the food, beverage, and hospitality industries. It is also a time to give thanks and to reflect on the needs of others.
In this season of giving, I am reminded why I wanted to become a Dame. It was to be part of a respected organization of like-minded women professionals who use their talents to give back to our community. What an honor and privilege! And, with this privilege comes responsibility. Whether we volunteer as mentors to women in our industries, or sponsor interns, chop vegetables at DC Central Kitchen or fundraise to benefit our grants and scholarships, together we can make a difference in our community and to women working to enter and succeed in our fields. If you haven't been active in the chapter recently, I invite you to step up and get involved with a project or a committee.
I wish you the very best during this winter holiday season and in the New Year.
Warmly, Drew Faulkner President drewcooks@mac.com

Dames News
The Dames book club met at Paula Jacobson's home on Nov. 19 to review "The Billionaire's Vinegar" a story of the cult, egos and fraud surrounding old wines. By perfect chance, Paula's husband, Greg, who was once in the wine business and put away a number of cases of wine when he left the industry. Most of it was consumed but, somehow, a mixed case was forgotten in the recesses of their basement and rediscovered during a recent renovation. Our book club, under the able instruction of Janet Cam, tasted a selection of these 30 to 40 plus year-old wines. Interesting. As a bonus, we got to try on hats from Paula's extraordinary and extensive collection. We are just SOO chic!
