Message from the President
Dear Sister Dames, It was so enjoyable to share our Summer Social Potluck with so many of you at Camilla Rothwell's lovely home on July 28. The food was delicious and the conversation lively. A big thank you goes to Camilla and her husband, Tony, for being such gracious hosts. It couldn't have been a nicer evening.
We held our year's first board meeting at Camilla's before the potluck. Thank you to all members who attended. Your comments and input were greatly valued. Your new board is energized, and fully engaged, planning an exciting year ahead. Looking forward, the board will meet in August for a strategic planning session. We will report the results of the session to the membership at the Autumn General Membership Meeting in October.
By special request, the Wheaton Walking Tour returns on September 20th! Come get a taste of the global marketplace that can be found in Wheaton.
If you have yet to visit our new website, put together by Stacey Adams, please do so. It is easy to navigate and provides a wealth of information about the chapter for members and the public. Thanks again to Stacey for producing the site for us!
I am very excited to make the announcement that, after much review, our chapter's standing rules have been updated and approved by the board! I can understand that, to many of you, this might not seem an update of great import. But I cannot stress strongly enough, how important recent this rule update is to the operational strength and integrity of our chapter. The bylaws, which we updated last fall, are our foundation; the standing rules create our structure. They detail the jobs and operations for each officer, director and committee. The result of all this work? We are poised to move forward as a lean, smoothly functional organization. A big thank you to Judy Rusignuolo, Stacey Adams, Diane Feffer Neas, and Theresa Morrison for all they've contributed to bring our standing rules up to date. Warm regards, Drew Faulkner President [email protected] |
Hurrah! Stacey Adams won her first major golf tournament at the PGA Charity Golf Tournament in Hartford, Connecticut on Monday. This event raised more than $30K for First Tee and Special Olympics. She apologizes for missing the potluck. Drew Faulkner was a guest on WAMU's Kojo Nnamdi Show on Wednesday, July 23 chatting about "Can't Stand the Heat- Cool Summer Cooking." She was oft referred to as the Les Dames DC President!
http://thekojonnamdishow.org/shows/2014-07-23/cant-stand-heat-and-stuck-kitchen/transcript Aviva Goldfarb appeared on Katie Couric's ABC-TV talk show Katie on July 7 to talk about the importance of family dinner, offering some tips for pulling together quick and delicious meals and demonstrating an easy Spiced Tossed Shrimp with Parmesan Grits. Aviva got in under the wire! The show's final episode aired July 27. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0hcyxD5F7U&feature=youtu.be Theresa Morrison passed the Wine & Spirits Education Trust ((WSET) Level 3 (Advanced) with distinction and earned the highest honors. The London-based WSET is the foremost international body in the field of wines and spirits education. Robyn Webb received a contract for her 17th cookbook, tentatively entitled The Perfect Meal(ADA 2016). The book is a compilation of her greatest hits. It will be a meal planner featuring comfort foods that are easy to prepare. CiCi Williamson retires August 8 after 26 years and helping more than 100,000 people as a food safety specialist on the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline. During that time she won numerous USDA awards for her work including two from the Secretary of Agriculture. Apart from the hotline, CiCi maintained the 1400 Q&As in the AskKaren.gov online database; wrote and designed hundreds of food safety fact sheets, press releases, blogs, podcasts and publications and chaired the publications committee. Now she will have time to finish writing a murder mystery set on a cruise ship. |

OF INTEREST Sheilah Kaufman has been invited by The Library of Congress to participate in the 2014 National Book Festival on August 30 at the Washington Convention Center. She will speak on Turkish cuisine and present a cooking demonstration. Her books: A Taste of Turkish Cuisine and The Turkish Cookbook: Regional Recipes and Stories both written with Nur Ilkin will be available for sale and a book signing DAMES DO ITALY September 7-14! From Pam Williams of the BC Dames chapter in Vancouver We just put together Dames Do Italy: a crazy week of chocolate (yes there are fabulous Italian chocolatiers), wine and food exploration for our BC Dames and want to invite any Dame to join us. Program Date: September 7 - 14, 2014 - and as I say on the program overview, yes, we know this is short notice for a trip to Europe but hey, when us BC Dames come up with a good idea, we just run with it. And this September couldn't have been a better time: EURO is trading lower against the USD right now so we can get everything booked at a lower conversion rate, tourists will be on their way home, weather will be fabulous and locals won't be into wine yet so we'll have Piedmont to ourselves. We've costed out the program as tight as possible while still including all the activities we want to experience. Travel experts recommend that you book travel to Europe at the sweet spot of 8 weeks out so we made sure that was within our confirmation time frame. It will be a small group 6 - 12 doing a large amount of exploring, eating, sipping, shopping and fun!! See the complete overview and registration at: http://www.ecolechocolat.com/en/dames-do-Italy.html If you feel this might be something your Chapter Dames would like to know about, please forward this invitation. Wishing everyone a very happy summer after a long, cold winter for a lot of us. Dame Pam Williams BC Chapter |

ENTRE NEWS will be published on a limited basis during July and August with editions on July 31 and August 27. The regular bimonthly schedule will resume on September 10. ENTRE NEWS is published on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month. Deadline for HURRAH! and other news is the first and third Thursday of each month. Please send a BRIEF paragraph with your professional and personal news that you would like your sister Dames to know about in HURRAH! OF INTEREST entries can be NO LONGER than 75 words. Less is always better. Send information to EN Editor Katherine Newell Smith [email protected] Thank you for you continued interest and participation. Katherine Newell Smith Editor, Entre News |
