Message from the President
Dear Sister Dames,
Congratulations to Kate Jansen, our 2014 Dame of Distinction! She joins a club of esteemed members who have all made tremendous contributions to our organization. I have to say, presenting the award to Kate was one of the most gratifying and moving activities of my presidency. When Kate's name was put forth in nomination for Distinguished Dame, all I heard were oohs and ahhs. She is so deserving of this award.
Congratulations, Kate! Thank you for all you do for Dames.
Thank you, also, to all who participated in our Autumn General Membership Meeting at Roofer's Union on Monday night. A special note of appreciation goes to Marjorie Meeks -Bradley and her staff for their warm reception. The food was delicious and the service was cordial, helpful and professional.
We had a lively discussion during the meeting about our proposed Fete in March 2015. In response to your questions and concerns, we are compiling more data and will send it to you shortly. Time is of the essence if we decide to proceed with the event; so, we will simultaneously send out the info and call for special meeting via conference call to take place in two weeks to discuss the issue more fully. In the meantime, we will answer any questions and entertain alternative ideas that are coupled with commitments to plan and execute those ideas.
Our second annual Craft Spirit of Poe on October 7th was quite successful. We had three goals for this fundraiser: raise money and broaden our reach and heighten our brand awareness among the 25 to 40 year-old age group. As part of our effort, we offered moderately priced tickets to a cool event that featured the top mixologists in town. The results were that we netted over $2000 and the majority of our 100 attendees was from our target demographic and new to our Dames list. The word is out about LDEDC. Thanks everyone, and especially Theresa Morrison, John Morrison, Nancy Hart and her partner Jerry Trice, who worked on Craft Spirit of Poe to make it such a triumph! Separate and heartfelt thanks to those who stayed afterwards to clean up!!
We so appreciate the talents and efforts displayed during Evelyn Bunoan's very special Philippine cuisine program on October 13th at her Philippine Oriental Market & Deli in Arlington . I continue to receive enthusiastic reports about the event.
Nine Dames and a friend participated in our Green Tables Food Day project, a day of service at DC Central Kitchen's Nutrition Lab October 14th. Big hurrahs to everyone who came out to help.
Looking forward, our programs committee is actively solidifying numerous events. Check the information below and mark your calendars.
Believe it or not, it is time to put our Holiday Potluck on your calendars. Karen Vartan has graciously offered to host us in her home this year. Save the date of December 8th for this convivial event.
Warmly, Drew Faulkner President [email protected]

THERE'S STILL TIME TO CONTRIBUTE TO CHARITYBUZZ 2014
We need your help to raise funds for our chapter and to support LDEI. Help us create auction items for our second CharityBuzz auction that is offered online November18 through December 9, 2014. On CharityBuzz, your donations are showcased to a community of over 100,000 registered bidders.
CharityBuzz auctions work! Our first auction, in 2013, brought in $11,366. Local chapters received 10% of the full purchase of their auction lots. This year we will receive 20%.
The secret for success? Our members' and their friends' generosity in offering amazing gifts so we can assemble fabulous bid packages from our chapter. Donation forms are due by midnight November 07, 2014.
We are looking for a variety of special can't-buy-this-off-the-street items that can be bundled into a package such as a Dame-centric tour of DC. Think about donating unique experiences that use Dames' expertise and access. Such experiences are one-of-a-kind and bring in the big donations! Our chapter donated three extraordinary packages last year. Let's see if we can at least match that again this year!
Please contact our President, Drew Faulkner, with your donations and ideas for packages.

On October 14th, Green Tables co-chairs Danielle Turner and Aviva Goldfarb gathered nine Dames and a Dame friend at DC Central Kitchen's Nutrition Lab for a Green Tables commemoration of Food Day. The Nutrition Lab serves as the home base for the Kitchen's Fresh Start Catering operation and as the commissary kitchen to produce nearly 5,000 healthy, scratch-cooked meals delivered to DC Public Schools daily. As we chopped loads of butternut squash, portioned and vacuum packed big bags of chicken breasts and salsa and assembled school snacks and lunches, we solved many of the world's most pressing problems and got to know each other a bit better.
