Dear Sister Dames,

Our Holiday Potluck is this Sunday, December 10, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the home of Linda Roth, 4019 Lorcom Lane, Arlington, Va.  LDEI President Hayley Matson-Mathes is flying in from Honolulu to join us.  She is very excited to meet our DC Dames.  If you haven't signed up yet, please do so as soon as possible.  You should have received an email with information on how to register using SignUpGenius. A link to register follows below.

As you may remember, we increased our scholarships and grants budgets.  Since Women in Gastronomy Symposium will be our biggest source of revenue this year, let's work together to bring in more participants and make it a great success. That will help us fully fund our programs and help other women achieve their goals.  Please volunteer, attend and get the word out.  Much appreciated!!

Wishing you and your families a wonderful, safe and blessed holiday.

Again, thank you for all you do for LDEDC.

Please feel free to contact me with any suggestions or concerns.

Tel: 301-537-8822

Yours truly,

Janet Yu

President
Les Dames d'Escoffier International, Washington, D.C. Chapter

WOMEN IN GASTRONOMY SYMPOSIUM MARCH 10, 2018

Our 11th biannual Women in Gastronomy symposium takes place Saturday, March 10, 2018 at the Universities of Shady Grove. The symposium is our largest fundraising event. We are fortunate that over 50% of our membership participates as speakers, committee chairs and members, program organizers, demonstrators and room coordinators. We anticipate another successful event and hope even more Dames volunteer this year.  Pati Jinich is our keynote speaker.

Cookbook Jumble, chair Susan Delbert[email protected].
Clear your shelves for the Holidays.  We will (once again) stage the ever-popular Cookbook Jumble during the Expo at WIG.  Please gather all cookbooks you would like to donate and bring them to the Christmas potluck at Linda Roth's home Sunday, December 10, 4019 Lorcon Rd, Arlington, VA.  Les Dames can issue a 501 (c) (3) donation confirmation for tax purposes.  I will have some of the forms at the potluck.  Kindly bring the books in either bags or boxes so I can transport them.  If time is too short or you are not attending the potluck, contact me at the National Press Club, 529 14th Street, NW, in downtown DC, to drop them off there--or you can drop them at my home in Silver Spring if that is more convenient.  I can give location details when/if you phone (202.486.4850).   The NPC is at the corner of 14th and F streets, about two blocks from the White House on the 13th floor.   If you would like to phone ahead, chef office is 202.662.7514.  Collection will begin after the holidays.
Culinary Garage Salechair, Katherine Newell Smith [email protected].  Collection begins at our chapter's December Pot Luck this Sunday.
Please begin to sort through your bookshelves for unwanted cookbooks and your closets and cupboards for new and/or unused culinary items to donate.
Lunchtime Expo. Co-Chairs: Jill Collins, [email protected] and Kyle Schmitz, [email protected]
Dames and non-Dames can participate in offering their goods, whether it is simply info about a restaurant with or without tastings, selling their cookbooks directly to the attendees or promoting a product. Please think about people you know who may want to exhibit. There will be a modest charge for a table at the Expo to cover costs.
Conference "Goody" Bags. Co-chairs:  Drew Faulkner, [email protected] and Carole Sugarman, [email protected]
Please consider offering product, gift cards, etc, to fill conference attendee goody bags. We also encourage anyone with a business to donate business cards to be included so conference attendees can learn about all the amazing businesses Dames have to offer. Items from non-Dame businesses are also welcome.

More info to come in the next Entre News!

Contact Eileen Dykes,  [email protected] or Laurie Bell[email protected] to offer your time and talents.
Also, Julia Rutland is updating the Dames' Restaurant guide for the symposium, so please send her the name of your restaurant to include on our list at  [email protected].  Also, please consider contributing to the conference goody bags.
FIRST ANNUAL DC CENTRAL KITCHEN CULINARY JOB TRAINING CLASS GRADUATION BRUNCH APRIL 6, 2018

At Marianne Ali's memorial service on Friday, December  1 at the Ronald Reagan building, Carla Hall and Cindy Kacher jointly told the audience about our chapter's commitment to host an annual brunch for a DC Central Kitchen Culinary Job Training class beginning with graduating class number 111. The brunch  will take place on Friday April 6 at 9:30 at the Kitchen, 425 2nd Street NW.

Please mark your calendars now and consider bringing a brunch dish that will serve 30 people to the Kitchen that morning by 9:15 before the 9:30 brunch.   Information will be sent out in advance. In addition, take the time to "renew your soul" and attend the 2:00 graduation that day at the Navy Memorial Auditorium at 7th Avenue and Pennsylvania Ave, NW.

Marianne was 60 years old when she passed away from pancreatic cancer on August 30. A graduate of L'Academie de Cuisine, Marianne joined DC Central Kitchen in 1997 after overcoming two decades of addiction. Soon after she began working for the kitchen's catering operation, she became a culinary instructor in its Job Training (CJT) program. She quickly moved up to become the program's director as well as for DCCK's Street OutReach, marshalling her culinary skills and her unique ability to relate to her students with authenticity and transparency. Under her leadership she realigned the CJT to focus on training and empowering formerly incarcerated citizens as they transitioned back into society and the workforce. She built a model program that reduces recidivism by 90%.

She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, empowerment, and respect for others that lives on in more than 1500 culinary students, nearly 200 DC Central Kitchen colleagues, and scores of community partners including our own chapter.  Her vision and dedication have been honored with the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington's Culinary Arts Visionary Award, the Catalyst Kitchens Network's Catalyst for Change Award, and the White House's Champion of Change Award.

By hosting an annual brunch for a graduating class, our chapter will honor Marianne and share with students that she is remembered beyond the DCCK and throughout our professional culinary community.

Editor's Note:

ENTRE NEWS is published on the first and  third Wednesday of each month.  It is on hiatus during the month of August. Deadline for HURRAH! and other news is the second and fourth Thursday of each month. Please send a BRIEF paragraph with your professional and personal news that you would like your sister Dames to know about in HURRAH!

HURRAH! is not meant as an advertising opportunity for a cooking class or event, rather it offers a shout out to members for recent accomplishments and honors.   Please submit your HURRAH to [email protected] in a succinct 75 words of less.

OF INTEREST offers Dames a chance to let their sister chapter members know about events they are involved in that might be of interest to a majority of the membership.  Its function is not to promote products, cooking classes, culinary trips, etc., rather to alert members to public programs that might be of professional interest, especially if Dames are featured.   We request OF INTEREST entries to be no longer than 150 words. Less is always better.

JOB OPPS can open Dames networks to employment opportunities.

Send information to Entre News Editor Katherine Newell Smith [email protected]

Thank you for you continued interest and participation.
