Dear Sister Dames,

As you may remember, this year we increased our scholarship funds to $20,000.  We are sending the money to the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) to manage the scholarships that will be awarded to women in our region who will attend or are attending CIA.  Thanks to Nona Nielsen-Parker for coordinating the scholarship funds.

When I became a member in 2010, I knew that I wanted to volunteer and get involved in our chapter's programs and events. As a result, I gained so much more than I have given. I  learned, as you probably have, that friendships are formed when you work on projects together and that your sister Dames bring a range of impressive talents. It reconfirms to me that if we give just a portion of those talents in service to LDE-DC's mission, we can make important differences in our community and build a stronger chapter.

So as you speak with colleagues about the possibility of becoming a Dame, please ask about their willingness to become active members who will contribute their time, expertise and connections to create and strengthen opportunities for women in our industries and to offer culinary education in our communities.

Women in Gastronomy Symposium is fast approaching. Please connect with Marie Steffany to volunteer and get the word out in your community to attend. See more info is below. It would be great if we were able to add an additional $10,000 to our scholarship fund for women earning culinary and hospitality degrees.  Please help us to make this our most profitable symposium ever.

Sips & Supper volunteers are needed.  Please see info below on how to sign up.  They help support two causes near and dear to our members' hearts, DC Central Kitchen and Martha's Table.

Thank you for all you do to help achieve LDE-DC's mission.

Please feel free to contact me with any suggestions or concerns.

Yours truly,

HURRAH!

Paula Shoyer just published her new book  "The Healthy Jewish Kitchen: Fresh, Contemporary Recipes for Every Occasion" (Sterling Epicure, 2017). Her book was featured in The Washington Post's Food section January 2 and that article was picked up in papers across the U.S.

Items from non-Dame businesses are also welcome.

More info to come in the next Entre News!

Contact Eileen Dykes,  [email protected] or Laurie Bell[email protected] to offer your time and talents.

Editor's Note:

ENTRE NEWS is published on the first and  third Wednesday of each month.  It is on hiatus during the month of August. Deadline for HURRAH! and other news is the second and fourth Thursday of each month. Please send a BRIEF paragraph with your professional and personal news that you would like your sister Dames to know about in HURRAH!

HURRAH! is not meant as an advertising opportunity for a cooking class or event, rather it offers a shout out to members for recent accomplishments and honors.   Please submit your HURRAH to [email protected] in a succinct 75 words of less.

OF INTEREST offers Dames a chance to let their sister chapter members know about events they are involved in that might be of interest to a majority of the membership.  Its function is not to promote products, cooking classes, culinary trips, etc., rather to alert members to public programs that might be of professional interest, especially if Dames are featured.   We request OF INTEREST entries to be no longer than 150 words. Less is always better.

JOB OPPS can open Dames networks to employment opportunities.

Send information to Entre News Editor Katherine Newell Smith [email protected]

Thank you for you continued interest and participation.
