Dear Sister Dames,

We are only a few weeks into our Chapter year and we have already launched our new website, have new education programs slated and hosted our first member engagement event with a gathering of our new members, their mentors and our LDEDC board members.  Thanks to all who could come to Pizza Paradiso in Georgetown and especially to Ruth Gresser for her generosity. The pizza was yummy and Ruth's secret game room provided lots of fun.  I haven't played skee-ball in years!  Stayed tuned. More member engagement opportunities are being planned.   In fact, make sure to sign up for our Summer Potluck. See the link below. It is tomorrow evening! All members are welcome.

Please share your ideas, time and talents by helping with a program or two or joining a committee. Eileen Dykes, Second VP Education and Community Outreach and Laurie Bell, Director - programs, would love to hear from you as would PR Chair Summer Whitford; Grants Chair Jessica Botta; Scholarship Chair Nona Nielson Parker; Green Tables Chair Susan Lutz and Global Culinary Initiative Chair Amy Riolo. Their contact info is below under "Join a Committee."

It is still not too late to pay your dues. Info is below. Treasurer Claire Gill is happy to help.

Registration is now open for the LDEI 2018 annual conference in Seattle, October 11-14, 2018 at the Renaissance Hotel Seattle Downtown. Please check the LDEI website for more information. (www.ldei.org).  If you are interested in attending, please let me know. The LDEI conference is a great way to meet your sister Dames from across the U.S. and world.

See you tomorrow at the Summer Potluck at the National Park Seminary community room in Silver Spring!

Please feel free to contact me with any suggestions or concerns.

Yours truly,

NOTE: This is the last issue before the August hiatus. Publication will resume September 5.
IN MEMORIAM

Our dear friend, Jane Olmsted, a 16-year supportive Dame, passed away on July 14. Before retiring, Jane was the assistant manager of the Sulgrave Club in D.C., where she meticulously coordinated hundreds of events, and a restaurant reviewer for The Courier. The daughter of a U.S. Navy Admiral, Jane grew up in China and on U.S. Naval bases. She was a graduate of Sweet Briar College in Virginia and a talented and collected watercolorist who studied painting at American University and Corcoran School of Art. In her eighties, Jane studied advanced Italian and regularly traveled to Italy, often accompanied by Evan Kleiman, cookbook author and host of NPR's "Good Food."  Jane was a 50-year member of the Junior League of Washington, D.C., and an avid gardener and award-winning floral arranger. She was also a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames and a board member of the Culinary Historians of Washington (CHoW). She will be sorely missed.

GET WELL SOON

CiCi Williamson is resting at home and expects a full recovery after a successful medical procedure on July 9 at Walter Reed/Bethesda Naval Hospital. Get well emails and cards are welcome. ciciwmson@aol.com; 6025 Chesterbrook Rd., McLean, VA 22101

DAMES SUMMER POTLUCK - TOMORROW!

Come join us to celebrate the start of our new chapter year and to meet and mingle with your sister Dames. We are delighted to gather at the National Park Seminary in Silver Spring (Forest Glen). (directions below) The NPS is a renovated campus that sequentially housed a hotel, casino, girls' school and a hospital between 1879 and 1940. It was restored into apartments and condos in 2008. The community room was the original dining room for the hotel.
DATE:  Thursday, July 19, 2018
TIME:  6:00-8:00 pm Potluck
Joint meeting of 2018-19 and 2017-18 boards will be from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm in the community room.
PLACE: The Community Room at National Park Seminary (Condominiums), 9610 Dewitt Drive, Silver Spring, MD  20910
RSVP:  Click here to let us know if you can come and what you wish to bring.   Please note the access code or password is summer2018 all lower case.
NOTE:  A refrigerator is available as well as running water, but there is no heating equipment, except for a very small portable convection oven.
DIRECTIONS:
From 495 take Exit 31 B onto 97 south (Georgia Avenue/Silver Spring). Turn right onto Seminary ROAD not Seminary Lane.  Continue straight on Seminary Road. It will turn into Linden Lane.  Stay on Linden to Dewitt Drive (at this point you will have entered National Park Seminary and it will look very strange). Turn right.  Go through a very short tunnel to the white fountain. The entrance to the community room is just across from the fountain, there will be a stained glass sign above the door that says "Ye Olde Forest Inn".  You may park in any spaces marked VISITOR, or on the street. DO NOT PARK IN ANY SPOTS MARKED RESERVED OR ON THE PARKING DECK AT THE FAR END OF THE CAMPUS.  BE SURE TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONAL SIGNS IN AND OUT. IT IS EASIER THAN IT SOUNDS. You may want to pull up to the door to drop off your dishes and then find parking.
Don't hesitate to call Susan Soorenko's cell (703) 862-6595) if you get lost.
SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT MENTOR NEEDED

Canieka Fleming, our first CIA scholarship awardee in 2017, graduated from CIA in April with a BA in Food Business Management and an impressive record including a busy schedule of on-campus activities. Since 2016, she has been a consulting manager for Shortcake Bakery in Hyattsville but is now seeking full-time employment and mentoring in the D.C. area. Let Janet Yu or Diane Neas (dianeneas@gmail.comknow if you are interested to speak with her.

DAMES NEWS

A happy hour welcoming our newest members was held at Ruth Gresser's Pizzeria Paradiso on Monday, July 9. This was the first LDE-DC member-engagement event organized by Stacey Adams, First VP - Membership and Lori Gardner, Director - Member Engagement. Eighteen Dames gathered in the game room at the pizzeria's Georgetown location to enjoy delicious pizza and play skee-ball and shuffle board while getting to know one another.

Thanks to the board members and mentors who came to support our newest members. We plan to have more small group events for members to connect in intimate settings, learn more about each other's interests and promote involvement in the chapter. Stay tuned!

Editor's Note:

ENTRE NEWS is published on the first and  third Wednesday of each month.  It is on hiatus during the month of August. Deadline for HURRAH! and other news is the second and fourth Thursday of each month. Please send a BRIEF paragraph with your professional and personal news that you would like your sister Dames to know about in HURRAH!

HURRAH! is not meant as an advertising opportunity for a cooking class or event, rather it offers a shout out to members for recent accomplishments and honors.   Please submit your HURRAH to kns4pr@erols.com in a succinct 75 words of less.

OF INTEREST offers Dames a chance to let their sister chapter members know about events they are involved in that might be of interest to a majority of the membership.  Its function is not to promote products, cooking classes, culinary trips, etc., rather to alert members to public programs that might be of professional interest, especially if Dames are featured.   We request OF INTEREST entries to be no longer than 150 words. Less is always better.

JOB OPPS can open Dames networks to employment opportunities.

Send information to Entre News Editor Katherine Newell Smith kns4pr@erols.com
