Dear Sister Dames,
Our Holiday Potluck will be held on Sunday, December 10, 2017 at the home of Linda Roth, 4019 Lorcom Lane, Arlington, Virginia. Details below. We will be honored to have a special guest, LDEI President Hayley Matson-Mathes. While she knows a number of our DC Dames through LDEI activities, she is very excited to meet all of you. Please come and give her a warm welcome.
I hope some of you were able to attend our professional development programs. More are on the horizon.
Eileen Dykes and Laurie Bell are finalizing the Women in Gastronomy Symposium programs. Please volunteer to help make this important event a great success.
Congratulations to Ann Stratte. She was installed as LDEI First Vice President. Drew Faulkner will serve as one of LDEI's Chapter Liaisons and will help facilitate communications between chapter presidents and the LDEI board.
Again, thank you for all you do for LDE-DC in making our organization a great success.
Please feel free to contact me with any suggestions or concerns.
Tel: 301-537-8822 Yours truly,
Janet Yu

Bev Bates gave birth to a baby girl, Dorothy Lynn Coakley, on Friday, November 3. Mom and baby are doing very well. This is the first baby in our chapter's history.
|
Alison Ricketts' baby is due around Dec. 1, though she is convinced he (yes, a baby boy so no little Dame on this round) will make his appearance early. Stay tuned.

Our 11th biannual Women in Gastronomy symposium takes place Saturday, March 10, 2018 at the Universities of Shady Grove. The symposium is our largest fundraising event. We are fortunate that over 50% of our membership participates as speakers, committee chairs and members, program organizers, demonstrators and room coordinators. We anticipate another successful event and hope even more Dames volunteer this year. Pati Jinich is our keynote speaker.
Cookbook Jumble, chair Susan Delbert, SMDelbert@msn.com. Collection begin after the holidays, TBD.
Culinary Garage Sale, chair, Katherine Newell Smith kns4pr@erols.com. Collection begins at our chapter's December Pot Luck.
Please begin to sort through your bookshelves for unwanted cookbooks and your closets and cupboards for new and/or unused culinary items to donate.
Dames and non-Dames can participate in offering their goods, whether it is simply info about a restaurant with or without tastings, selling their cookbooks directly to the attendees or promoting a product. Please think about people you know who may want to exhibit. There will be a modest charge for a table at the Expo to cover costs.
Please consider offering product, gift cards, etc, to fill conference attendee goody bags. We also encourage anyone with a business to donate business cards to be included so conference attendees can learn about all the amazing businesses Dames have to offer. Items from non-Dame businesses are also welcome.
More info to come in the next Entre News!
Also, Julia Rutland is updating the Dames' Restaurant guide for the symposium, so please send her the name of your restaurant to include on our list at juliarutland@me.com. Also, please consider contributing to the conference goody bags.

Susan Barocas produced a spectacular, sold-out all-day symposium, Israeli Cuisine as a Reflection of Israeli Society, at American University on November 13. It brought together the leading Israeli academics in the fields of food studies and cultural studies in tandem with Israeli chefs and food experts.

In honor of Marianne Ali, our chapter will host an annual brunch for a DC Central Kitchen (DCCK) Culinary Job Training class beginning with graduating class number 111. It will take place on Friday April 6 at 9:30 at the Kitchen, 425 2nd Street NW. Please mark your calendars now and consider bringing a brunch dish that will serve 30 people to the Kitchen that morning by 9:15 before the 9:30 brunch. In addition, take the time to "renew your soul" and attend the 2:00 graduation that day at the Navy Memorial Auditorium at 7th Avenue and Pennsylvania Ave, NW.
Marianne was 60 years old when she passed away from cancer on August 30 and, for two decades, was DC Central Kitchen's Director of Culinary Job Training and Street Outreach. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, empowerment, and respect for others that lives on in more than 1500 culinary students, nearly 200 DC Central Kitchen colleagues, and scores of community partners including our own chapter.
By hosting an annual brunch for a graduating class, our chapter will honor Marianne and share with students that she is remembered beyond the Kitchen and throughout our professional culinary community. As a part of DC Central Kitchen's Memorial for Marianne on Dec 1 at 2:00 at the Ronald Reagan Building, Cindy Kacher will announce LDE-DC's commitment. All Dames are invited to the memorial.

DCCK VOLUNTEER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PRESENTATION
You are also welcome to volunteer and offer your expertise to Class #111 or any classes before or after (see above). The Kitchen's Liz Reinert has asked Cindy Kacher to collect names and email addresses of Dames who would like to volunteer on one or more Thursday mornings from 9:00-10:00 and give professional development talks to the class. This is a new DCCK program to bring more of our culinary community into the kitchen to communicate directly with the students. Please email Cindy at ckacher@aol.com to express your interest. Liz will take it from there. It is especially rewarding to visit the class in this capacity and then to follow up by attending the same class graduation.

ENTRE NEWS is published on the first and third Wednesday of each month. It is on hiatus during the month of August. Deadline for HURRAH! and other news is the second and fourth Thursday of each month. Please send a BRIEF paragraph with your professional and personal news that you would like your sister Dames to know about in HURRAH!
HURRAH! is not meant as an advertising opportunity for a cooking class or event, rather it offers a shout out to members for recent accomplishments and honors. Please submit your HURRAH to kns4pr@erols.com in a succinct 75 words of less.
OF INTEREST offers Dames a chance to let their sister chapter members know about events they are involved in that might be of interest to a majority of the membership. Its function is not to promote products, cooking classes, culinary trips, etc., rather to alert members to public programs that might be of professional interest, especially if Dames are featured. We request OF INTEREST entries to be no longer than 150 words. Less is always better.
JOB OPPS can open Dames networks to employment opportunities.
Thank you for you continued interest and participation.
