Dames Who Read: Curry: A Tale of Cooks and Conquerors, by Lizzie Collingwood, serves up a delectable history of Indian cuisine, ranging from the imperial kitchen of the Mughal invader Babur to the smoky cookhouse of the British Raj. In this fascinating volume, Collingham reveals that almost every well-known Indian dish is the product of a long history of invasion and the fusion of different food traditions. Don’t miss this discussion, led by Sheila Crye, as it will be held in person at her home, where she’ll be serving a not-too-spicy Indian dinner. Wednesday, October 18. Dinner starts at 7 p.m. Sheila’s address is 2909 Woodstock Avenue, Silver Spring.
Please RSVP to Sheila by October 10 at crye4@aol.com. You can also join us by Zoom if you prefer. The Zoom discussion will begin at 7:30. Zoom Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84246673677 Reel Tasty: Hunger (2023) is about Aoy, an unusually talented Bangkok street-food cook, who is invited to join the fine dining industry under the tutelage of the infamous Chef Paul, and Tone, a supportive sous chef. What happens next tests her cooking skills, her ambition, and most of all, her character. The food scenes will make you want to get a ticket to Thailand. And the ethical issues raised in the film will make you ponder the demands of upscale restaurant work versus the rewards of cooking "everyday" food. The film is available on Netflix.
